Saul Goodman seemed to be gone for good after the mall heist in Better Call Saul Season 6, but he’s back in the next episode. Why can’t Gene move on?
Saul Goodman’s retirement didn’t stay after all; here’s why Gene succumbs to old habits a Better call Saul season 6. In Better call Saul Season 6, Episode 11 (“Breaking Bad”), Gene goes back on his word with a new scam with Jeff and Buddy, conning wealthy targets in bars. The plan has all the hallmarks of Slippin’ Jimmy, even down to using the old name “Viktor” when speaking sweetly. As the operation becomes more successful, Saul Goodman rears its ugly head, and in the final scene of the episode, Gene has fired Buddy, insisted on robbing a cancer patient, and broken into the house of ‘this patient despite the fact that the window of opportunity has already closed. Gene has turned to “Suing Saul” once again, and Kim Wexler seems to be the trigger. Gene’s karaoke-fueled terror crusade begins immediately after a phone call to Kim goes awry, suggesting that their conversation is what brings Saul Goodman back into play.
Why Kim’s phone call turns Gene into Saul again
Better call Saul Season 6, Episode 11 deliberately obscures the content of Gene’s phone call with Kim, but from his outburst on the way out of the booth, things obviously didn’t go well. Kim probably refused to pick up the phone or demanded that Gene never call her again. Gene visits Jeff with a new criminal proposal immediately afterward, thus continuing a long-standing psychological pattern of using criminality and facades to avoid dealing with emotional trauma.
Having started his criminal journey as a young man, Jimmy McGill delved into “Slippin’ Jimmy” shortly after his father’s death. He started calling himself “Saul Goodman” when Chuck killed himself. And when Kim Wexler let him in Better call Saul In Season 6’s “Fun & Games,” Jimmy responded by fully committing to his Saul Goodman alter ego, becoming the despicable character the audience knew. Breaking Bad. Now rejected by Kim in Gene’s timeline, Jimmy once again uses the thrill of crime and the shield of an alter ego to avoid facing his feelings.

As Francesca rightly points out, Saul left Albuquerque with a large amount, meaning he doesn’t. need the money he is stealing from unsuspecting bankers. The way Gene insists on robbing a cancer patient is also downright weird, almost like he doesn’t care if he gets caught. Could this be his true goal? Gene pulls back Better call Saul trick that involves getting caught by the authorities, but the scams had to be legitimate to ensure the DEA doesn’t get suspicious when they catch their man.
