Kevin Smith thinks about HBO’s Green Lantern Corps. The show is being removed
Filmmaker Kevin Smith hints that Warner Bros. Discovery may have canceled the planned Green Lantern series on HBO Max, along with other DC series.
Acclaimed and cult filmmaker Kevin Smith believes that Green Lantern The series on HBO Max has been canceled. Since 2011 Green Lantern film bombed with critics and audiences at the box office, Warner Bros. has struggled to figure out what to do with the superhero emerald. In 2014, when Warner Bros. first announced their slate of DC films that would make up their shared cinematic universe, they announced Green Lantern Corps as a film with a release date set for July 24, 2020 that the film never made.
In 2020, HBO Max officially greenlit one Green Lantern series by Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith. The series was to include several Green Lanterns and had cast Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) as Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia: Here we go again) as Alan Scott. The series had secured a director and Marc Guggenheim recently teased in June 2022 that they were working on the Green Lantern the end of the season already. The series was meant to be a major push for HBO Max to bring a high-profile, big-budget series to the streaming service to compete with projects like Disney+ and Netflix.
During an appearance a Hollywood Babble-On, Smith along with co-host Ralph Garman discussed the recent news of several DC project cancellations. Smith said he hasn’t heard anything about the Green Lantern series and said he wouldn’t be surprised if it was canceled, as he reveals there were many DC properties that fell victim to the merger. Smith specifically said that he hasn’t heard anything for sure about the Green Lantern’s fate, so it’s just speculation at this point. Smith said:
“I don’t know for sure, but I haven’t heard anything about the Green Lantern series they were supposedly doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a victim as well.”
The new regime of Warner Bros. Discovery has brought massive changes to the DC brand. Multiple CW series com Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrowi Naomi have been cancelled. Warner Bros. also canceled DC movies com Wonderful twins as well as Batgirl, which had finished filming and was in full post-production. Cancellations are likely to continue as cancellation rumors have circulated Supergirl film and fans wondering what the future holds for projects like Zatanna i blue beetle.
Warner Bros. Discovery has not officially made any statement about the fate of the Green Lantern series, but the outlook is bleak. Warner Bros. Discovery has begun making major pushbacks on HBO Max’s original scripted programming, and if the plan for DC is big theatrical movies, it doesn’t look like Green Lantern has a future as a TV show on HBO Max. Many will be waiting to see, but there is an opportunity Green Lantern could join the ranks of many superhero series that were never meant to be.
