Fans are destroying the (apparently temporary) end of the universe of The Vampire Diaries, but thankfully, re-watching marathons of the show will always keep them alive. Iconic characters defined tvd over the years, but Katherine and Elena were definitely the most memorable players on the show.

With the exact same face, the two were as different as chalk and cheese, but if you looked closely, there were many uncanny similarities between the two women. The paths they chose and even some traits matched, even though Katerina was a villain and Elena was the heroine.

They were Doppelgängers with shared lineage

The biggest opening twist in the tale The Vampire Diaries was that Katherine and Elena were doppelgängers, the result of Qetsiyah’s curse on Amara and Stefan. They were identical in appearance, but their personalities were very different.

This also meant that Katherine and Elena were related by blood. They all belonged to Amara’s lineage, and although distant, they were related to each other, and also to poor Tatia. Their lives, until the beginning of time, were destined to be intertwined.

Both lost their families

As Katherine’s story unfolded, fans discovered how much she had changed over the years. Like Elena, when she was young and innocent, she had lost her entire family to Klaus’ misguided anger. When he became a vampire, Klaus killed all of Katherine’s siblings and both parents in horrific ways.

Poor Elena suffered a similar fate. She lost her parents in a tragic car accident, which she herself survived. Jeremy died enough times, and he also lost his Aunt Jenna to Klaus, as did his doppelgänger.

They Killed People

Ultimately, Elena as a character was not as compassionate and kind as she was portrayed: she had killed five named characters as well as countless unknown travelers. Jesse, Connor the Vampire Hunter, Alaric, Jolene, Markos and their followers were all victims of Elena.

Katerina was a known villain, and it would be hard to calculate how many people she had killed in her 500 years of life as a vampire and spirit. Some notable casualties were Jeremy and Caroline.

They were hunted by Klaus

By virtue of being doppelgängers whose blood was tied to the curse that suppressed Klaus’ wolf side, both Katherine and Elena were born with a target on their back. Katherine managed to escape his murder, but at the great cost of losing her family.

Elena faced the same torment as Klaus pursued her to drain her of her blood as well. Ironically, Katherine was the one who brought him to Elena. Fortunately, John Gilbert managed to link his life to Elena’s so that he would not die after breaking the curse.

Both were vampires who were cured

Elena never wanted to, but due to Rebekah’s machinations, she became a vampire. He had his ups and downs as a vampire, and for a while, there were two identical vampires walking around Mystic Falls.

In fact, both Katherine and Elena even got into a fight at Mystic Falls High School, during which Elena forced Katherine to take the cure and become human again. Later in season 6, Elena voluntarily took the cure and became human. Both Elena and Katherine had been humans, turned vampires, and then healed again.

They let their friends fall for them

Katherine used people willingly, but Elena did the exact same thing with her friends, only without the harshness and threats. Rose, Trevor, Isobel, the tomb vampires, and Mason were just a few people that Katherine manipulated with a promise of love and friendship, but they always suffered for her wrongs while she was saved.

Elena used her friends as shields against all the evil beings that were after her. Bonnie suffered more when she lost her parents and used her magical powers for vampires at Elena’s behest, even though her ancestors didn’t want her to. Caroline, Stefan, and Damon were also doing their best to help her, and she didn’t seem to mind.

They were friends with powerful Bennett witches

Elena was Bonnie’s best friend, who she realized was descended from the powerful Bennett line of witches early in the show. Bonnie saved Elena from many dire situations with her magic, and the two remained friends, despite Elena’s vampiric connections.

Interestingly, Katherine’s companion in 1864, Emily, was also a Bennett witch who willingly helped Katherine carry out her cunning plans. He had no problem using his magic on Katherine and her vampire friends and was quite docile.

They both loved the Salvatore brothers

This is the biggest similarity between the two doppelgängers: their bond with the Salvatore brothers. Katherine played both Damon and Stefan, seeing them at the same time, feeding their jealousies (along with vampire blood) and turning them both into vampires.

Elena started off with a crush on Stefan, but like Katherine, she also became involved with Damon. Both Katherine and Elena loved Stefan and Damon, as if history was repeating itself.

They came back from the “dead”

At various points in the show, Elena and Katherine dated in a way that resembled death, but wasn’t quite. At the end of Season 6, Elena was put into a deep sleep that would only be broken when Bonnie died, so she was for all intents and purposes gone.

Katherine was dragged out of the other side and into oblivion, and people were sure she died after trying to steal Elena’s body. Unsurprisingly, both Elena and Katherine returned from their deaths: Elena awoke from her sleep and Katherine returned as the Queen of Hell.
