The new season of Virgin River it’s easily the best yet, so it’s good that it’s already been renewed for season 5. Fans love the show because of the comfort the series brings when watching it. Although the story contains some more serious or morose moments, the majority of the show offers a comforting atmosphere.

It tells the story of a community of people living in a small town, navigating life like everyone else. Surprises and plot twists were carefully woven into the story to complement it, and some of them were plot twists that fans had predicted before the season aired.

11 Calvin dies

Calvin threatening Brie in the dark after leaving the hospital.

Calvin was the big bad for most of the seasons, being responsible for the drug operation run by Emerald Lumber and showing that he has no morals, even when it came to killing people.

Most of Season 4 was spent trying to locate Calvin, and they eventually did, only to find that his ship had been blown up. It soon became apparent that Calvin was just a higher pawn in the game, and that he wasn’t the one driving everything.

10 Mel decides to resign

Mel Monroe tells Doc that she's giving up on Virgin River

In a plot twist that no one saw coming, Mel tendered her resignation to Doc at the end of Virgin River Season 4. This was the result of a more complicated story, with the new Dr. Cameron overly involved in her relationship with Jack, causing an uncomfortable situation for both of them.

Mel, being the kind and nurturing person that she is, once again put the needs of others before her own. Thinking how hard it would be for Doc if they lose the valuable help Cameron brought to the clinic, she decides to resign as a nurse and midwife in hopes of convincing Cameron to stay.

9 Muriel enters for hope

Muriel and Hope didn’t get off to the best of terms when the show started and continued the trend when Muriel seemed to develop an interest in Doc. However, his search for companionship is probably only due to his loneliness and the feeling that no one cares.

At the turn of the century, Muriel achieved hope in a way no one expected. At first, he spoiled her like everyone else, but he wasn’t afraid to put hope in her place, which no one else tried. They struck up an interesting friendship, and it will be very interesting to see how it develops next season, but most of all, he let Hope know that he cares, and it was a touching date that left fans with misty eyes.

8 Melissa Montgomery

Melissa Montgomery in Virgin River, arriving at the restaurant for dinner with Jack and Mel.

Another giant plot twist was Melissa Montgomery. Everyone thought Calvin was the one running the drug operation at Emerald Lumber. But it turns out that someone else was pulling the strings. Melissa shows up, first posting Brady’s bail, then showing up to threaten him.

But none of the viewers had an inch of the complexity of the situation until Melissa showed up at the dinner party as Nick’s sister. What makes this even more complicated is the fact that Nick and Jack are now business partners, so there’s no telling how much this will affect their lives. One thing is for sure: it can’t be anything good, because there was an ominous scene of someone taking pictures of them inside the restaurant.

7 Brie deciding to press charges

Brie Sheridan in Virgin River, talking to her ex about pressing charges

The previous seasons set up Brie’s story slowly, and this season her secret was already unknown to the audience. More people found out about her sexual assault, including Brady, who went out of his way to support her. However, no one expected Brie’s ex to have the audacity to call and even show up at Virgin River.

Brie, who has done her best to try to get over this and forget it ever happened, has come to realize that trauma doesn’t work that way. In an attempt to conquer her demons, she told Don that she would report what he did to her. Considering she’s one of the best characters on the show, it was nice to see Brie slowly come into her own when surrounded by supportive people.

5 Mel’s mother-in-law’s crazy lawsuit

Mel and her mother-in-law at the restaurant in Virgin River

This was madness personified. When Mel’s sister-in-law came to town and wanted to meet, fans didn’t love it because she’s been very rude and condescending to Mel in the past. However, it turned out that she was ready to turn over a new leaf and warned Mel that her former mother-in-law was hiding her.

Her mother-in-law believed she could sue Mel for custody of her two fertilized embryos. It was as crazy for Mel as it was for the audience, viewers could already see the legal battle that Mel would have to endure along with everyone else. But thankfully, the finale nixed that idea and fans can relax.

4 Paige shows up

Paige shows up at the Preacher's door looking serious in Virgin River

This season focused a little less on the drama with Paige and Christopher, although it was still very much present in the background. It allowed Preacher to take some steps forward in his life, while actively trying to find Christopher.

But when Preacher was on a date with his new girlfriend, the last thing the audience expected was Paige to crash the night away. Paige appeared out of nowhere, advancing the story with Vince and Christopher until it finally reached its conclusion. It was one of the storylines that fans wanted to see wrapped up in Season 4, but it will be interesting to see if Paige won’t return to Virgin River or make other arrangements.

3 The twins are not Jack’s

This might not be the biggest plot twist. People have predicted early on that Charmaine is lying to Jack about the parentage of the twins. But since they dragged the story out for four seasons, a lot of people started to accept that they weren’t going the obvious route and that the twins are theirs.

But the season finale confirmed what everyone has been saying since season 1. Charmaine lied and Jack is not the father of her children. But considering how far into the show this revelation was, it’s safe to say that no one expected this twist at this point.

2 Mel’s baby is Jack’s

The third season ended with a shocking twist of Mel admitting to Jack that she used his embryos and that she is pregnant, but she is not sure who the father is. This season continued that with Jack coming to terms with this and choosing to love the baby either way, resulting in one of the best dates of the season.

They could have chosen not to know if it wasn’t for Mel’s evil mother-in-law trying to get custody of the embryos and claiming her right to Mark’s baby. Given this show’s love of drama, it was expected that the baby would be Mark’s, but the season finale revealed that Jack and Mel have nothing to worry about because Jack is the father of their baby .

1 Denny is terminally ill

Denny telling Lizzie about his illness, looking serious and sad.

When Denny first appeared, fans loved the prospect of Doc spending time with his long-lost grandson. As the season progressed, however, the darker it seemed Denny was with all the pills that weren’t prescribed to his name and mysterious money transfers. Fans began to doubt his true intentions.

But in the end, it was revealed that Denny has Huntington’s disease, which is a terminal illness. That was probably why he looked for his grandfather after losing his father. I wanted to meet him, but also to spend his last moments with his family.
