Love, Death, and Robots: Top 10 Reddit Reactions to Season 4 Renewal
Now that Netflix has announced it Love, death and robots has been renewed for a fourth season, relieved LDR Reddit fans are happy and full of suggestions. When two very creative filmmakers like David Fincher (fight club) and Tim Miller (deadpool) are teaming up to create an animated sci-fi anthology series, one would expect some wild and edgy stuff.
Showcasing different directors and animation styles in each episode, Love, death and robots is designed to celebrate animation as art and update many classic sci-fi themes and ideas along the way. It’s occasionally NSFW because the show’s narratives and visuals often feature monsters, violence, and dark comedy.
Provide more stories from classic sci-fi writers
Having drawn from short stories by Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton and John Scalzi, the stage is wide open for Love, death and robots to tackle more classics, which seem to vibrate better with the general attitude of the anthology than the newer stuff.
Excited by the show’s willingness to re-adapt older stories, Redditor Neo2119 suggests that the producers look to sci-fi greats such as “Asimov, David Brin, Larry Niven, Kurt Vonnegut and many others.” Isaac Asimov (Foundation series) was particularly interested in AI and robotics, and wrote stories such as “I, Robot”, “The Robots of Dawn”, and “Robot Dreams”.
“Bad Traveling” is the best episode ever!
“Bad Traveling”, an episode in volume 3, involves the crew of a sailboat that has been taken hostage by a giant man-eating crab (Thanopod), one of Love, death and robots’ the scariest creatures yet. The Thanopod demands that the sailors transport him to a smorgasbord (an island full of unsuspecting people).
Many Redditors agree with user nahdawgeatmyass that “Bad Traveling was absolutely amazing.” A lot happens in this rather gory episode, from the ethical and strategic decision-making of the captain, who must keep the Thanopod fueled during the journey, and the unnatural intelligence of the monster itself.
Surviving the corporate ax
“Good to see they didn’t kill it with the animation cuts,” says Redditor TheRain911, referring to Netflix’s current round of cancellations that cut some of its animated series.
While its book of animated shows shrank, Netflix only discontinued projects that were in-house shows from its own animation studios (IGN). Third-party productions, including those of Blur Studio Love, death and robots, came out unscathed. Having entertainment industry powerhouses like Fincher and Miller at the helm also added extra armor to the series’ durability.
The twilight zone of the modern era
“It’s a twilight zone for the modern era if it continues this well,” says Reddit user Blu3sku1L. It’s always dangerous to compare a modern show to a legendary classic like the original twilight zone which has a long and established history of influence on many TV shows that followed it.
There’s no doubt Love, death and robots features some of the worst dystopian worlds viewers have seen in a while, but the show’s loyal acolytes see their beloved series through rose-colored glasses. However, this is the kind of fandom that keeps a show’s heartbeat viable in terms of viewership, and who knows?
The four types of LDR episodes, from mature to immature
Despite his love for Love, death and robotsmany Reddit fans are willing to admit that not every episode in an anthology will be everyone’s cup of tea, and not all of them will be great either.
According to Reddit user NoNefariousness2144, “There are four types of episodes in this show.” This list includes, 1) episodes that are surprising and interesting with deep themes, 2) episodes that are not surprising and interesting, 3) cute but forgettable, and 4) terrible and immature. Everyone agrees that Tier 1 episodes are brilliant.
I hope season 4 keeps up the good work
Nothing scares fans more than the prospect of another bad season that would cause disappointment, waste time and overshadow the great installments that came before.
“Fantastic news!” shouts Redditor donuteater111, “Hopefully it lives up to season 1 and 3 (although I still really enjoyed season 2).” Short film anthology shows will always have a hit-or-miss aspect due to the quantity and eccentricity of the stories they produce, and Love, death and robotsThe best episodes are stellar. Also, it’s unlikely that Fincher, Miller and company have run out of ideas for Season 4.
I love all three robots!
Appears for the first time in LDR Volume 1, Episode 2, “Three Robots”, the story follows a trio of robots as they explore the ruins of a vanished human city. Based on a short story by the ever-irreverent sci-fi author Jon Scalzi, the goofy robots reappear in Volume 3 in “Three Robots: Exit Strategies.”
“Three Robots shorts are my favorite!” comments Reddit user AstraCraftPurple. Judging by the overall response, Redditors seem to love or hate Three Robot’s shorts, but cat lovers seemed to tip the scales in their favor. The antics of K-VRC, XBOT 4000, and 11-45-G provide a humorous break from a lot of serious, gory, scary, and sometimes R-rated material in the other episodes, and the three droids make the Love, death and robots list of the best characters.
Hoping for more expectation-twisting
Movie shorts are notorious for strange or unpredictable endings, and if anything, Love, death and robots You haven’t pressed that button hard enough. Anthology fans love a good dark screwball twist.
“You subvert our expectations by having an army unit stumble upon some ancient horror,” offers Redditor cairoxl5, “but they have a good time and learn something positive about themselves.” The narrative opportunities of animated shorts are almost limitless, therefore Love, death and robots it can subvert and twist conventional plots until hell freezes over, which could be a good story idea in itself.
Please sir, can I have some more?
Few pieces of entertainment news excite fan bases more than the joyous announcement of a new season, while cancellation news translates into anger, disappointment and loss.
“I hope they get many more seasons,” exults Reddit user BlankImagination, “Love, death and robots I was hooked from the first episode.” That’s the kind of fan response to TV execs they like to hear. Between fan loyalty and Fincher and Miller’s presumed desire to continue, this may have been an easy call for Blur Studios and Netflix.
Great show, but less soldiers vs. Old evils would be good too
From extraterrestrials a Starship Troopers a predatorsci-fi action shows have long loved the idea of best vs. best, as it pits elite human soldiers against ominous and seemingly unstoppable alien enemies.
Reddit user yrrosimyarin loves the show, but hopes that “… we’re done with the ‘modern military unit stumbles upon an ancient evil’ plot lines for next season.” When producers make an anthology show about robots, you have to expect things to get pretty trope from time to time. It’s very likely that the creators have noticed their reliance on particular plots and fans should expect some new story directions in Season 4.
