The 10 Best Video Games to Play This Month (Updated September 2022)
Early 2022 kicked off with some surprisingly high-profile releases, including a flagship line pokemon game, PC ports, FromSoftware’s latest Souls epic, and remasters of acclaimed PlayStation games. However, things continue to fill 2022’s vast catalog of games through September.
After a strong year full of blockbusters, September will be relatively quieter, but still with some notable titles worth keeping an eye on. This month is sure to be dominated by Sony’s upcoming high-profile remake The last of us series, but Nintendo’s colorful shooter franchise is sure to make a splash alongside other smaller-scale games.
The Last Of Us Part I
Admittedly, it doesn’t make much sense on the surface for a game as aging as Naughty Dog’s. The last of us to get a PS5 remake, especially considering how it holds up even better thanks to the 2014 PS4 remaster. This could be an attempt to capitalize on HBO’s highly anticipated upcoming TV adaptation, but from the game often hailed as one of the best story-driven titles ever, The Last of Us Part I will undoubtedly take the lion’s share of the limelight this fall.
In addition to reworked visuals taking advantage of the PS5’s impressive hardware power, the game aims to modernize the controls and combat mechanics to match the streamlined changes of The Last of Us Part II. The Last of Us Part I launches around the corner on September 2nd, with a PC release at a later date.
Although on a much more familiar note, Nintendo’s flagship shooter series Splatoon has proven to be successful on its own terms since its inception on the Wii U. Splatoon 3 has players playing as colorful anthropomorphized characters known as Inklings and Octolings who engage in equally colorful and upbeat paintball battles.
The game is expected to include returning features such as a story mode, with a new narrative about the return of the mammals, to complement the competitive multiplayer, as well as new weapons and maps. Splatoon 3 will launch on September 9th exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
The Chronicle of DioField
It’s been nice to see that the tactical RPG subgenre has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years. It is in large part thanks to the success of Intelligent Systems’ fire emblem series with Nintendo, as well as Square Enix’s willingness to publish/develop smaller scale JRPGs outside Final Fantasy i Dragon Quest.
However, Square and Lancarse’s The Chronicle of DioField proves through demos that this is no mere clone, with the game having cleverly created a hybrid real-time and turn-based combat system. With a fantastic backdrop, players will take on the role of a band of mercenaries tasked with helping to prevent war and a story full of game of thrones-esque political intrigue. The Chronicle of DioField will be released on September 22nd for PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX|S, Switch and PC.
Developer Andrew Shouldice’s tunic was it was already released earlier this year as one of the indie darlings of 2022, but this fall it’s getting a second life. The game launched to stellar reviews, but still seemed to be a bit underrated due to the major triple-A releases of the year.

Cult Of The Lamb
Publisher Devolver Digital is ready to release its next potential indie hit in the form of Massive Monster’s Worship of the Lamb. The game is a roguelike action-adventure with simulation elements, and it has perhaps one of the most charmingly dark and creative premises of a game this year. Worship of the Lamb puts players in the role of a possessed lamb called “The One Who Waits,” who is tasked with creating a fiery cult to pay off their debts to an ominous being who saved their lives.
The game revolves around fighting through exciting randomly generated levels, recruiting and customizing your cults and cult members at the heart of the game. Worship of the Lamb will be released on August 11 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Soul Hackers 2
Atlus is known for publishing some of the best JRPGs in the industry, and this year’s flagship release is a highly anticipated sequel to another Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series. Soul Hackers 2 will finally succeed its PS1 predecessor after 25 years, with its story revolving around two warring Devil Summoner factions.
Two supernatural beings born from the data stream descend into the human world to avoid their doom. The game centers around a turn-based combat system focused on exploiting enemy weaknesses for devastating attacks, executing special abilities, and using demon allies. Arguably the most prominent release of July, fans will finally get their hands on Monolith Soft. Xenoblade Chronicles 3. This series, and Monolith itself, have earned a huge level of goodwill since the critically acclaimed original JRPG on the Nintendo Wii, and 3 is set to expand the core gameplay of the series in a remarkable way.
The game’s fantasy sci-fi story follows the constant struggle between the mech-oriented country of Keves and the aether-oriented country of Agnus, and will feature two protagonists. And instead of using groups of three characters, that total is expanded to seven along with the ability to change character classes. Xenoblade Chronicles will be released on July 29 for Nintendo Switch.
In what is perhaps the most inventive game to launch in July, the PlayStation exclusive diverted puts the player in the role of the titular lost cat. The endearing title from developer BlueTwelve Studio is an adventure game that sees this feline protagonist try to find his family again after falling into an alternate world populated by robots, viruses and other machines.
The game is a creative combination of puzzle solving and platforming, with the drone companion B12 helping to translate robotic languages and store items.
