10 28 Days (2000) — $62 million

• Stream on Netflix

28 daysthe movie responsible in part for one of Jim and Pam’s sweetest moments The office, couldn’t be more different from Danny Boyle’s terrifying horror film of a similar title, released two years later. That said, it’s just as visceral, but instead of running from zombies, Mortensen’s Eddie Boone and Sandra Bullock’s Gwen Cummings are in rehab trying to deal with what’s haunting them.

The film is solid fun, even if it doesn’t strive for outright shock. Unfortunately, with a budget of $43 million (for Mojo Ticket Office), the film needed to earn slightly more than its final total of $62.2 million to break even.

9 Witness (1985) — $65.5 million

• Streams on Showtime

Both a (mostly) accurate look at Amish life and a genuinely compelling thriller, Testimony it’s the Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis show after all. But, Mortensen gets some time to shine as Moses Hochleitner, one of the most skeptical members of the Amish community. Like most, but not all, of the others, the Hochleitners are wary of outsiders, even when they come as honestly as Ford’s Sergeant John Book.

Seconds the numbers, TestimonyThe price was kept pretty low at $12 million. If the movie had been made a few years later, after McGillis had done it Top Gun and Danny Glover had done it lethal weapon, would be much higher. But as it stands, the film turned that $12 million into an excellent domestic haul of $65.5 million.

• Stream to Max Go

A loose remake of Alfred Hitchcock Mark M for murder, A perfect murder was one of several erotic films of the 1990s directed by Michael Douglas and, unfortunately, is probably the most forgettable. That said, Mortensen does a lot in a quiet role, that of a con man who works his way into the lives of a wealthy couple through the wife’s infidelity.

The budget for Andrew Davis’ Hitchcock remake is reportedly around $60 million IMDb. Which was a substantial price for a romantic drama/thriller. One of Mortensen’s favorite Redditors’ movies is also one of his highest-grossing. The film tells the story of distance rider Frank Hopkins and his trusty horse Hidalgo. With Mortensen in the role of Hopkins, Hidalgo it’s led by a capable and likable presence, but the film (with its massive budget) didn’t generate enough interest in a crowded box office market.

Joe Johnston’s film had a budget of $100 million, massive for an untested and untested property. unfortunately, Hidalgo it barely cleared that number worldwide with a gross of $108 million (for Mojo Ticket Office).

The Stallone name has always commanded a high salary, however the numbersThe reported budget of $80 million is staggering, and perhaps a bar of profitability that could not have been met even with the name of a big star in the marquee. 5 Crimson Tide (1995): $159 million

The late Tony Scott Crimson Tide stands out as one of his best films, and although it is primarily a showdown between Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington) and Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman), Mortensen gets time to shine as Weapons Officer Lt. Peter Ince. Mortensen’s character is effectively what causes the crew to blindly follow Ramsey to open their minds to new, safer possibilities.

Like most of Scott’s other action films, Crimson Tide was a huge hit in the summer of 1995, grossing nearly $160 million worldwide on a modest (considering the stars) budget of $55 million, for the numbers.

4 Green Book (2016) — $320 million
