The new movie beast pits Idris Elba against a man-eating lion on the savannah. It heralds the return of the animal attack genre films that have fallen out of favor in Hollywood in recent years. But while there have been some silly entries in the genre over the years, there have also been some very entertaining ones.



There are many elements of beast which reminds me of other similar films. From the focus on this specific genre to the tone to the familiar aspect of the story, fans might like these movies too after watching beast.

10 Jaws (1975)

Although beast feels like elevating the animal attack movie beyond typical B-movie offerings, jaws was the first to show how amazing a genre film like this could be. It also featured perhaps the scariest movie sea monster ever.

Backcountry is set in a more relatable place as it follows a young couple on a camping trip in the woods. But it proves to be just as dangerous as they get lost and are soon terrorized by an angry bear.

The familiar element of beast it adds a lot to the story. While few can relate to the terror of coming face-to-face with a lion, many people know the feeling of fearing for their child and trying to keep them safe.

While that threat is worrisome enough, the flood also brings several alligators. It’s fun watching a daughter fight to protect her father in this intense and terrifying thriller. It makes for a thrilling ride from start to finish.

Elba is a great actor to watch in this type of film. He has the acting ability to elevate the film, but he’s also an exceptional movie star and action hero that fans can tap into as he takes on this deadly animal foe.

The gray is another animal attack movie that makes heavy use of its protagonist. Liam Neeson plays a hunter who finds himself trapped in the arctic tundra with other survivors of a plane crash. And as familiar as Neeson is with hard-hitting fight scenes, he meets his match with a pack of hungry wolves.

1 The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)

Although there are so many different animals featured in the Man vs. beast, lions have not been used very often. However, Beast does a very effective job of showing why they are considered the kings of the jungle and are apex predators.

Another movie that did a great job of making lions a formidable threat is The ghost and the darkness. Based on a true story, Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas star as hunters trying to stop a pair of deadly lions terrorizing a local construction operation in 19th century Africa.
