FBI Director Christopher Wray declined to say whether a report led by Senate Republicans outlining potential criminal activity by Hunter Biden shows any signs of “Russian disinformation,” several weeks after Sens. Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Republicans, and Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republicans. , sent their findings to the Department of Justice.

The Republicans’ report contained hundreds of pages of evidence that senators say shows potential criminal activity by the Biden family related to its ties to China and Chinese intelligence services.

At a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Thursday, Johnson asked Wray if he believes anything in the report could be traced back to Russian disinformation. Wray said he has reviewed the work of the two senators, but declined to assess the quality of the report.

“That would be a difficult question for me to answer,” Wray said when asked specifically if there were signs of disinformation or Russian influence. Johnson argued that the FBI should view his report as a verifiable and actionable source of information.

“There is no Russian disinformation,” Johnson said. “This report is completely clean of any interference by foreign influence, even though we have been falsely accused, even by the chairman of this committee, of spreading Russian disinformation.”

That exchange came on the same day that House Republicans said they had evidence that President Biden was directly involved in his son Hunter’s business dealings and that the president’s claim that he knows nothing about his son’s activities is “a lie”. House Republicans said the Biden family enriched themselves by “providing access to the family” and said that raises potential national security concerns.

House Republicans also dismissed the first claim by former national security officials that the Hunter Biden laptop, which provided evidence of the Biden family’s business activities still under investigation by the GOP, was nothing more than a Russian disinformation operation.

In the Senate, Johnson pressed Wray on whether the FBI had any role in arranging this letter, but Wray said the FBI had no involvement as far as he knew.

“I’m not aware of any FBI involvement in what you’re describing,” Wray said.

Johnson said the whistleblowers believe the FBI “initiated a scheme” to downplay information about Hunter Biden and that it is reasonable the FBI may have helped arrange the letter signed by former intelligence officials. He also said that if the FBI was involved, it played a role in interfering with the 2020 election.

“This letter from 51 intelligence officials interfered in the 2020 election to a far greater extent than anything Russia or China could have expected,” Johnson said. “You have to admit it needs to be investigated. I don’t think you do.”
