Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, also declined to comment.
While Democratic leaders did not comment on McCarthy’s threat, rank-and-file Democrats have criticized the idea that Reps. Eric Swalwell, Adam Schiff and “Squad” member Ilhan Omar will be kicked out of some commissions the next Congress.
“He is trying to silence a powerful voice, singling out the only Muslim on the committee and fueling extremism and division,” said Rep.-elect Greg Casar, D-Texas.
ILHAN OMAR, ERIC SWALWELL BACK ON MCCARTHY FOR PROMISE TO BLOCK THEM FROM HOUSE COMMITTEES
McCarthy, the Republican nominee for the next speaker of the House, told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday that when his party takes control of the House in January, he will follow through on a longtime promise to ban Omar, Schiff and Swalwell of the committees. .
GOP HOUSE MAJORITY YOUNGER, MORE DIVERSE THAN IT HAS BEEN IN YEARS
The GOP leader said Swalwell’s prior association with a Chinese spy, Schiff’s promotion of Russian collusion theories and Omar’s criticism of Israel were disqualifying.
“One thing I said from the beginning, Eric Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the public sector,” McCarthy said. “Why would we give him a security clearance and the secrets for the United States? So I’m not going to allow him to be” on the House Intelligence Committee, where he currently serves under Democratic leadership.
“You have Adam Schiff, who lied to the American public over and over again. We will not allow him to be there [Intelligence] Neither committee,” McCarthy added. Schiff now chairs that committee.
“Look at Deputy Omarhis anti-Semitic comments that have gone forward,” McCarthy added. “We will not allow him to be in Foreign Affairs,” where he works today.
Omar, D-Minn., said McCarthy’s pledge was just another example of Republicans targeting her.
“Since the moment I was elected, the Republican Party has made it their mission to use fear, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism to get me into the House and through millions of dollars in campaign ads.” , Omar said. “McCarthy’s effort to repeatedly single me out for contempt and hatred, including threatening to remove me from my committee, does nothing to address the issues our constituents are dealing with. It does nothing to address the inflation, health care or solving the climate crisis”.
