Gungrave GORE Review: The sublime and the ridiculous

Although it has received a mixed reception from critics over the years, the Gungrave the games have gained a cult following. Starting with Gungrave in 2002, the franchise has received a handful of releases and even one Gungrave anime series over the next decade. now, Gungrave has returned with Gungrave GORE, courtesy of developer IGGYMOB.
Gungrave GORE. returns to players in the role of grumpy anti-hero Grave, a former hitman returned from the dead. Grave is determined to destroy Seed, a mysterious alien drug, and find those responsible for the damage that is spreading across the world. This means shooting as many people as humanly possible and causing absolute mayhem wherever the player goes, in a story that takes the player to various locations in a dark version of the Southeast Asian future.
In terms of gender, Gungrave GORE is a third-person style action game focused on an arcade-style point system and causing flowery violence. Those who enjoy the tone of the best games in the Devil May Cry series will find a lot to love here, especially given its strange premise and mix of gothic and 2000s sci-fi imagery. It’s wonderfully stupid when it’s on. his prime, as if Type O Negative’s Peter Steele was on a mission to save the world in the bloodiest way possible.
From a purely sensory perspective, Gungrave GORE it’s a literal blast. The player blasts round after round of ammo, causing shards of scenery to explode, with blood and fire at every corner. This also feeds into the gameplay, which while simplistic is quite satisfying, with the player always shooting and always moving with the goal of getting the best possible score at the end of each level similar to Sonic.
This also feeds into the game’s soundtrack, which is a strong mix of techno and industrial for the most part. He fits the Ridiculous mood well, taking advantage of the agitation of his mood and adding intensity to the combat. However, there are some issues, especially when it comes to transitioning between different sections or in and out of combat, which can be a little annoying.
Gungrave GORE has a leveling system where the player can help build their own version of Grave. This means they can put more emphasis on damage, melee power, or unlock new special moves, which is a nice touch. It’s still relatively restrictive, and the choices to make are often pretty obvious: get more specials and increase the damage that regular shots do for maximum fun, but it does add a bit to the experience nonetheless.
where Gungrave GORE begins to fall is in moments of its execution. There is a lack of finesse compared to the like bayonet i devil may cry, with the clumsy movement and occasionally somewhat repetitive action. This problem is at its worst when there are sections of the game that require a bit more athletic movement than Grave can really handle, and those moments fall pretty flat compared to his usual shtick.
Character is also extremely important in these kinds of bombastic action games, and this is another area where Gungrave GORE struggles Grave may seem the part – part of Top Dollar The Ravenparty The Mariachi – but it’s more of a blank slate. Compared to the strong characters of Dante or Bayonetta, it lacks impact, and that means the game lacks that driving force.
As such Gungrave GORE is a solid enough third-person shooter with plenty of action to be found in its various levels. It doesn’t quite have the nuance of its best competitors, with moments of clumsiness holding it back from greatness, but it manages to be a satisfying adventure throughout its duration nonetheless.
