Donald Trump reacts after Supreme Court orders release of House Democrats’ tax returns
The US Supreme Court has ordered Donald Trump’s tax returns to be released to House Democrats, ending a lengthy legal challenge brought by the former president, and Trump is not happy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the decision “unprecedented” and said he “believes.” [a] terrible precedent for future presidents.”
“Why would anyone be surprised that the Supreme Court ruled against me, they always do? It’s unprecedented to hand over tax returns, and it creates [a] terrible precedent for future presidents,” Trump wrote in a pair of posts.

“The Supreme Court has lost its honor, prestige and standing, and has become nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price. They refused to even look at the 2020 election fraud. Shame on them!” he added, including a rhetorical question about whether President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden will undergo the same treatment.

In a later post, Trump called the higher court’s ruling “ridiculous.”
“On the Supreme Court, the President of the United States has no ‘position’ on his own choices, how ridiculous?” He wrote
For years, House Democrats have sought Trump’s tax records to investigate possible tax fraud or other wrongdoing by him or the Trump Organization.

A Democratic-controlled House Mediation and Media Committee, led by Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., first requested six years of Trump’s tax returns in 2019. That effort was quickly blocked by the Trump administration, as he was still president at the time.
The Trump administration’s Treasury Department refused to hand over the records, but after President Joe Biden won the White House, the new Justice Department reversed the previous administration’s decision.

In 2021, Biden’s DOJ said Congress should be able to review Trump’s tax returns.
Trump and his legal team immediately sued to block the Treasury Department from releasing the records and asked the Supreme Court to intervene, spurring the legal battle.
Lower courts had sided with the House committee, but Chief Justice John Roberts granted a stay in October, blocking the Treasury Department from releasing the records until the Supreme Court could rule on the legality of the case.

On Tuesday, Roberts denied Trump’s request and reversed his earlier block.
“The request for suspension of the mandate presented to the Chief Justice and referred by him to the Court has been denied,” said a Supreme Court ruling. “The order so far given by the first judge is vacated.”
The process to release the records comes after Republicans won a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, giving them the power to pick majorities in each committee.

It was not immediately clear whether Republicans, when they take control of the House in January 2023, intend to continue investigating the tax records.
Some Republicans have called for an investigation into the businesses of Biden and his son when they take power in the chamber.
