ITV World Cup pundit and Denmark forward Nadia Nadim says she has “lost the most important person in my life” after the sudden death of her mother.
The 34-year-old former Manchester City player had left the broadcaster’s coverage of the 0-0 draw with Denmark and Tunisia before full-time on Tuesday.
Nadim revealed that his mother had died after being hit by a truck on Tuesday morning while returning from the gym.
“Words can’t describe what I’m feeling,” she said.
In a statement on Wednesday, wrote: “I have lost the most important person in my life and it happened so suddenly and unexpectedly. I was only 57 years old.
“She was a warrior who had fought for every inch of her life. She gave my life not once but twice, and everything we are/are is because of her.
“I lost my home and I know nothing will ever feel the same. Life is unfair and I don’t understand why her and why this way. I love you and I will see you again.”
“Everyone at ITV, those working with Nadia in Qatar and the company as a whole, are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic news.” said ITV.
“We have offered our support to Nadia and our thoughts are with her and those closest to her at this incredibly difficult time.”
Nadim was born in Afghanistan and his family fled to Denmark after his father, an army general, was executed by the Taliban in 2000.
He went on to play for clubs such as Portland Thorns and Paris St-Germain, scoring 38 goals in 103 games for Denmark.
