Japan’s late comeback surprises Germany

A stunning late comeback by Japan saw four-time winners Germany slump to a shock defeat in their World Cup opener in Qatar.
Germany dominated a frantic game for large periods but failed to capitalize on their pressure, before Japan had the Khalifa International Stadium erupt in a mixture of celebration and surprise.
Substitute Takuma Asano struck hard from a tight angle to make it 2-1 to Japan and ran towards the photographers in the corner of the stadium in great delight.
There was a collective pause in the arena as the ball descended from the roof of the net before the fans realized it had gone in.
Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, before Japanese substitute Ritsu Doan equalized in the 75th minute.
The tie came after a string of impressive saves at each end – Japan’s Shuichi Gonda made a double save to deny Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann, before Germany’s Manuel Neuer turned in Junya Ito’s effort .
Germany, who finished top of their group in Russia 2018, had missed several chances to extend their lead when the score was 1-0.
They face tough opposition in Group E with 2010 winners Spain coming up on Sunday, followed by a final game against Costa Rica.
Before kick-off, the German players put their hands over their mouths during a team photo and in the stands a German government minister, Nancy Faeser, wore a OneLove bracelet.
It comes after news from the German football federation is investigating if it is legal for FIFA they threaten players with penalties for wearing the OneLove armband in Qatar
The German team he later tweeted that human rights are “non-negotiable” and “we stand our ground”.
