Texas Rep. Gonzales slams Mayorkas over border chaos in his district: ‘Change is coming’
U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, stood by the soon-to-be Speaker of the House during a press conference Tuesday at the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas and called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas.
Gonzales, a veteran, represents a Texas district spanning more than 800 miles along the border that is porous and notorious for illegal immigrants entering the US.
To help shed light on the issue of illegal immigration, Gonzales said he has organized 16 border trips with officials.

More than two million migrant encounters have occurred this year alone, and he said he has urged the Biden administration to work with House Republican leadership to secure the border.
“Our border is wide open and people are dying every day,” Gonzales said. “These are discussions I wish we were having in Congress, but it starts somewhere.
“Change is coming,” he added. “That change is now. That change doesn’t happen without those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and fight for it.”

Just before Gonzales took the podium, Representative Kevin McCarthy called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
McCarthy said the secretary claims the border is secure, but has blocked ICE and Border Patrol agents from doing their jobs.
McCarthy added that three Border Patrol agents, in the past 10 days alone, have killed themselves, bringing the number of agents who have taken their own lives this year to 14.

“His actions have produced the largest wave of illegal immigration in recorded history,” McCarthy said of Mayorkas. “Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty.”
Gonzales was also joined by Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican, who said Border Patrol agents have had more than four million encounters with illegal immigrants since Biden took office and “doesn’t care “.
Crenshaw said the cartels are just across the border, calling it a national security crisis, and are “flooding” the US with “deadly fentanyl.”
“They are at war with us and we do nothing,” he said.

Gonzales won re-election to another two-year term in Congress by getting just over 17% more votes than his opponent, Democratic candidate John Lira.
