Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., did not say Sunday whether he would comply with a subpoena if Republicans issue one when they take control of the House of Representatives.

Schiff, the current chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, made the remarks on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about the possibility.

“We will have to consider the validity of the subpoena,” Schiff said. “But I would certainly see my obligation, the administration’s obligation to follow the law. And the fact that they have not followed the law is not a precedent, I hope it will be broadly followed. But we will have to look at the legitimacy or lack thereof. of the legitimacy of what they do.”

With Republicans poised to take control of the House of Representatives, Schiff said Republican Reps. Kevin McCarthy, who wants to be Speaker of the House, and James Comer, the new chairman of the House Oversight Committee, do not believe in recent congressional investigations, including former President Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia and the January 6 riots at the Capitol.

“[Reps. James] Come and [Jim] Jordan and [Kevin] McCarthy will do nothing but carry Donald Trump’s water,” Schiff said.

Schiff also responded to McCarthy’s vote to remove him and other Democrats from House committees, criticizing the California Republican for not having “any core set of beliefs” while painting a picture of McCarthy struggling to get the 218 votes needed to become speaker.

“The problem with McCarthy is not what I said about Russia,” Schiff said. “The problem with McCarthy is that he can’t get to 218 without Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar and Matt Gaetz.”

“And so he will do as he is asked,” he continued. “Right now, they’re calling for me to be removed from my committees and McCarthy is willing to do that.”
