Protests against Covid restrictions in China have intensified in the wake of a fire that killed 10 people at an apartment block in Urumqi.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Shanghai to remember the victims and demonstrate against the restrictions. Many were heard calling for the resignation of President Xi Jinping.

Blocking of blocks of flats has been blamed for the deaths in the fire.

Although Chinese authorities deny it was the cause, Urumqi officials issued an unusual apology late Friday and pledged to “restore order” by gradually lifting restrictions.

Footage posted on social media also showed a student from Nanjing University of Communications holding a vigil for the victims.
