‘Armed force’ must be deployed in Haiti to stop ‘biblical’ migration event, top Biden officials say: report
Senior officials in President Biden’s administration are pushing for US allies to deploy troops to Haiti to prevent a potentially massive migration event.
According to the New York Times, US Coast Guard encounters with Haitians trying to immigrate to the US by boat have already increased by more than 400% since last year. Haitians are fleeing the country due to massive gang violence, with criminal organizations taking over major population centers, including some of the country’s poorest areas.
“This has always been the US government’s biggest Haitian nightmare, a mass migration event,” Daniel Foote, who was the US special envoy to Haiti in 2021, told the Times. biblical, with people falling anything that can float. We’re not that far from that.”
Although Haitian government forces have successfully counterattacked against gang groups, their troops are afraid to walk freely in cities like Port-au-Prince, which they recently recaptured.

The Haitian government suffered a major loss of stability after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise last year.
The attack encouraged gang leaders to attack government-held Port-au-Prince and Cite Soleil, one of the world’s poorest cities.

Fear of an impending mass migration event has led several current and former Biden administration officials to push for a “multinational military force” to be deployed to the country, according to the Times. However, officials are not looking for the US to deploy American troops.
The US has already supported a resolution for the UN to deploy a “rapid reaction force” in Haiti, but has made little progress. The UN last had a troop presence in Haiti in 2010 after the devastating earthquake that rocked the country earlier that year.
