A Palestinian man rammed his car into an Israeli soldier on Tuesday, seriously injuring her, before being shot dead by Israeli police in the occupied West Bank. He was the fourth Palestinian killed in a series of violent incidents throughout the day.

It was the latest bloodshed in a escalating escalation of Israeli-Palestinian violence in the wake of last week’s attack in Jerusalem that killed two Israelis.

The violence began overnight near the city of Hebron, where clashes broke out between Israeli forces and residents.

The Israeli military said the clashes broke out after two army vehicles became stuck due to mechanical problems. He said the soldiers opened fire after Palestinians threw stones and explosives and that Palestinian gunmen also opened fire.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said 44-year-old Mufid Khalil was killed and at least eight others were wounded by Israeli fire.

In another incident, two brothers were killed by Israeli fire during clashes with troops near the village of Kafr Ein, west of Ramallah in the northern West Bank, early Tuesday. Palestinian news agency Wafa identified them as Jawad and Dhafr Rimawi, aged 22 and 21.

The Israeli military said troops operating in the village were attacked by suspected stone and firebomb throwers, and soldiers responded with live fire.

Later on Tuesday, a Palestinian driver rammed his car into an Israeli pedestrian near a West Bank settlement north of Jerusalem in what the army said was a deliberate attack. Security camera footage showed the vehicle turning and slowing down in front of the woman, before speeding up and hitting her. She was thrown into the air as the driver drove away.

The Israeli military later confirmed that the seriously injured woman is a soldier.

Police chased the driver and shot him. The man, identified as Rani Abu Ali, 45, of the West Bank city of Beitunia, was pronounced dead at a Jerusalem hospital.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been rising for months amid Israeli nighttime raids in the West Bank, sparked by a series of deadly attacks on Israelis that killed 19 people in the spring.

At least 31 people have been killed in Arab attacks in Israel and the occupied West Bank since the beginning of the year, according to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.

More than 140 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year, making it the deadliest year since 2006. The Israeli military says most of the Palestinians killed have been militants. But young stone-throwers protesting Israeli army incursions and others not involved in clashes have also been killed.

In a new report, the military described a fragile situation in the West Bank as a hardline new Israeli government prepares to take office. The army said it has mobilized thousands of soldiers and arrested about 2,500 Palestinians and seized about 250 weapons since March.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians seek these territories for their hoped-for independent state.
