The Republican National Committee is launching a review of the GOP’s performance in the 2022 midterms and is convening a panel of outside advisers to help chart strategy for future elections.

The move comes a couple of weeks after Republicans’ poor performance in the midterm elections. The GOP fell short of a majority in the Senate, won only a slim majority in the House of Representatives, and lost key gubernatorial races and control of state legislatures, undermining Republican expectations of an election “red waves”.

The review of the national party’s performance during the 2022 cycle will be led by a team of current RNC members and led by Henry Barbour, a longtime Mississippi RNC committeeman and nephew of the former RNC Chair Haley Barbour, and California RNC Committee Member Harmeet Dhillon. . The group is expected to report its findings in the first six months of next year.

We have to look at what worked and what didn’t work in the ’22 cycle and learn the right lessons to put ourselves in the best position to win in ’24,” Barbour told Fox News.

“We’re going to have an honest, thorough report,” added Barbour, who co-authored the GOP post-election autopsy in 2012. “Our goal is to win elections. That’s what political parties are supposed to be about.”

The RNC is also putting together what it calls a “Republican Party Advisory Council” to help advise on strategy for the national party going forward. The group will meet regularly with RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel.

“As we evaluate the midterms and the plan for 2024, we are bringing together a wide range of respected leaders from our movement to come together and help chart a winning course in the coming years,” McDaniel said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to have this talented group of Republicans stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us as we work to grow our party, hold Democrats accountable, and elect Republicans.”

“The Republican Party stands for liberty, justice, safety, opportunity, prosperity and individual liberty,” Conway said in a statement. “Making sure that voters, candidates and Americans of all backgrounds know this and can communicate it in a friendly, accessible and actionable way is the key to growing a party that under the leadership of President McDaniel has increased support among key stakeholders. That means finishing our sentences, offering details and solutions, and turning the double-digit trust the GOP has earned on key issues into victories at the ballot box.”

The launch of the internal review of the RNC and the outside advisory group comes as McDaniel seeks a fourth two-year term to lead the party’s national committee, which is unprecedented in modern GOP history. However, as the party licks its midterm wounds, McDaniel faces potential challenges to his leadership. The most serious of the potential challenges comes from Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York, who came close to defeating Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in the deep-blue Empire State.

Others weighing in on the challenges include South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.
